Sphinx is another use of lion, it combines the body of the cat and the head of the pharaoh. The Sphinx evokes the king in his divine aspect, it combines the courage of a lion and the virtues of the sun. Unlike the gods take an animal head, Pharaoh, which is not yet fully god on earth, adopts the body of an animal. The Sphinx plays the role of protector to the pyramids or temples. The Sphinx of Memphis is the largest known sphinx transportable: alabaster, it is 8 m long and 4.25 m in height, weight is estimated at 80 tons. It does not include registration for the date, but it probably represents King Amenhotep II (1430-1405 BC). He had to find the entrance to the temple of Ptah. It bears the attributes of Pharaoh nemes, uraeus, false beard curled (divine aspect). See also Sphinx of Giza.
The lion can also represent the enemies of Egypt. Thus, the shield found in the Appendix of the tomb of Tutankhamun, the young king waved his right hand his sword while his left hand he seized him by the tail two lions, symbols of the enemies of Egypt. In the background, the vulture goddess Nekhbet, goddess of Upper Egypt, stands on papyrus, symbol of Lower Egypt. On the right, an inscription in three columns praise the physical power of the pharaoh who kill beasts. The scene is dominated by the winged solar disk. The bottom band, the desert is represented surrounded by three hills, it is the hieroglyph symbolizing foreign countries. The enemies of Egypt belong to the chaos, the pharaoh must eliminate to maintain the universal order.Cairo Museum.
As we saw on the first pallet makeup, the pharaoh is represented by a very early bull fighting and trampling his enemies. In this range, the pharaoh is represented by both the bull destroying enemies and the lion: the pharaoh in his fortified palace. The two symbols: forward and guard (defense) are associated to the same object.
